An American Spy is the third in the series by Steinhauer featuring super spy Milo Weaver. Thanks to St. Martin’s/Minotaur Press, I received a copy in exchange for my honest review. I’m truly unclear why I wanted to try this third one…I read the first two, and in my review for the second one, I said it “I just wanted it to be OVER. sort of like the movie “Raising Arizona”– couldn’t stand to stop without finding out what happened but god was I glad when it was over.”
So, here goes Milo again. The department of the CIA known as the Tourists (trained assassins) has been nearly completely obliterated, Milo has been shot in the gut, and although Milo wants to try to make a normal life post-spy biz, his former boss Alan Drummond takes over one of Milo’s former aliases, heads off for London, then disappears. So of course Milo has to go after him, and he is back in the spy biz once again. It’s sort of like Godfather Part 3: Michael Corleone says “just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!” And, just like Godfather Part 3, this one was meh — it just didn’t do it for me. At all. Two stars. (I will likely read #4 of the Milo Weaver series, if there is one, just because Steinhauer is a good writer, but I won’t be super excited at the prospect)
