I’ve been a regular reader of Linwood Barclay’s books for several years, generally awarding 4 or 5 stars, so I was pleased to get a copy of Find You First from William Morrow and NetGalley in exchange for my honest review. And I tried. More than once. I kept thinking maybe being home for more than nine months now has made me cranky…or impatient…or just not into another woman in danger story.Or possibly a story about someone with an incurable illness just hit too close to home for me right now.
What it really came down to was that I just didn’t much care. The story opens with a gazillionaire in the tech world gets diagnosed with a terminal illness…and it’s a 50-50 chance that any children of his would inherit the disease. No problem for a childless man, right? But oops when he was young, he had made a few bucks from donating his sperm. And the result was nine children.
Coincidentally, a young woman who is trying to make a documentary film about her search for her biological father. Of course, she was the product of her mother using the services of a sperm bank. Put these two people together, add in that the potential heirs to the guy’s fortune are getting knocked off one by one. Like I said, I didn’t much care whether they were found, who was killing them, whether the woman found her bio-dad or the rich guy found his heirs. So, this is REALLY unusual for me with Linwood Barclay books, but I can only go two stars. I will definitely try Barclay’s next one, and hope that it really is just me.
