About two weeks ago, I was looking for a good binge watch and came across The Night Agent on Netflix. I loved it, so when I was looking for something to read and saw Inside Threat by Matthew Quirk WHO ALSO WROTE THE NIGHT AGENT…sign me up!
So the story is one of those political intrigue thrillers, where you pretty much know the hero will save the day and things will (mostly) be all right, but the question is just who are the bad guys, and how much “willing suspension of disbelief” is required to enjoy it? This particular story revolves around the Secret Service, in particular Agent Erik Hill. He is known for heroic actions and doing whatever it takes to keep the government safe. And there is a ton of action…
After years of diligent performance as an Agent, Erik is becoming disillusioned, and when things start to happen, and it turns out the government is truly under attack, Erik knows he has to do whatever it takes to protect both the people and the institution he has sworn to serve and protect. One reviewer called it “Hunger Games meets Jack Ryan,” and that’s a pretty fair description.
It reads like it was written with a movie version in mind, and it is perfect for that, or for a one or two day binge read. A bit simplistic with the political intrigue, but I was glad it didn’t sink into some MAGA BS, but maintained the tension from the get-go right up til the end. Four stars. I admit I am looking forward more to Season 2 of Night Agent than I am to Mr. Quirk’s next thriller, but I still appreciate the entertainment and appreciate William Morrow and NetGalley for providing a copy in exchange for this honest review. Four stars.
