I love twisty psychological thrillers (think Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl), so when I read that David Ellis’s latest, Look Closer, was “part Gone Girl, part Strangers On A Train, I was READY! Thank you to Penguin Group/G.P. Putnam’s Sons and NetGalley for providing a copy in exchange for this honest review.
There is a wealthy couple in Chicago, Simon and Vicky , who are classically normal…or they appear so. He is a well-respected law professor, and sheis an advocate for domestic violence victims. But we just KNOW that they are not what they seem, being in reality far from normal! Oh, and maybe one of them is a murderer.
Their secrets and veneer of normalcy start to unravel after a woman is found hanging in a mansion in a nearby suburb, Classic thriller tropes including a secret affair, a multi-million-dollar trust fund about to come due, and a long-held grudge with lust for revenge are all there in this complex thriller. A fun ride as everything comes into view. Four stars.
