David Baldacci is an extremely prolific novelist after having a successful career as an attorney. His first novel, Absolute Power, was turned into a good movie in 1997 starring Clint Eastwood and Gene Hackman. Since then, he has written MANY books, both in series (Atlee Pine and Amos Decker, to name two) and as standalones. His latest, Nash Falls, is projected as the first in a series, but is a terrific standalone financial/legal thriller.
Walter Nash is a top-level financial wizard who has a wife and daughter, and a comfortable life.
He is estranged from his recently deceased Vietnam-veteran father, and after the funeral, he is recruited by the FBI to help bring down a global crime network. (What could possibly go wrong?)
It seems that the crime(s) are traceable to the company where Nash has been working, and he feels he has little choice but to accept the FBI’s demands. But when the potential target of the investigation discovers that Nash is working with the FBI, she decides to turn the tables on him, forcing him to change course both just to survive as well as to get justice and perhaps revenge.
Fast-paced, full of interesting people and crimes, it is a fun read as well as just being terrifically entertaining. Thanks to Grand Central Publishing and NetGalley for providing a copy in exchange for my honest review. Four stars.
