The Dead Don’t Sleep, by Steven Russo, is perfect for readers who enjoy an action-packed story with complex characters and a moral dilemma or two thrown in. I happen to be married to just such a reader, and before I had a chance to begin the book, my husband picked it up and was INSTANTLY hooked.
Frank Thompson is a veteran who served during the war in Vietnam as a Marine advisor to an Army secret ops team that did some horrific things as part of their service. Fifty years later, Frank and his nephew Bill are at a shooting range where they encounter a member of that Army team who, along with a couple of other members of that unit that Frank led back in the day, band together to extract what they think is justified revenge for something they believe Frank did during the war. Frank has to use all his skill and training from back in the day to survive the attack this group has planned.
It’s impossible to tell more without spoiling the story, but I’ll just say my husband blew through this in two days and liked it so much we immediately bought Mr. Russo’s book Thieves, which my husband found equally enjoyable. I’ve got Thieves on my TBR list, and plan to read this one as well, but wanted to get this down while the impact of my husband’s enormous enjoyment of The Dead Don’t Sleep was still fresh in my mind. Five stars, and I hope Mr. Russo keeps writing!
