In spring of 2016 I read and reviewed Clare Mackintosh’s debut novel I Let You Go, and loved it. Then, somehow, in 2017 I completely missed her second novel I See You. Then, in 2018, I gave another top review to her latest psychological thriller, Let Me Lie, and I jumped at the chance to get a copy from Berkley and Netgalley in exchange for my honest review. Here we are with 2022’s The Last Party, which sounded like another winner. Thanks to Sourcebooks/Landmark and NetGalley, I received a copy in exchange for this honest review.
The setting is a vacation home on Mirror Lake belonging to Rhys Lloyd, who owns several vacation homes on the lake. He decided to invite pretty much the entire village to come out to his place to schmooze and drink champagne with the wealthy new neighbors. All goes well until Rhys is found floating in the freezing cold lake…dead.
Policewoman Ffion Morgan lives in the village, and it seems like everyone is a suspect – including her friends and family. Turns out Ffion has secrets of her own to protect, and there has been LOTS of lying going on. Turns out seemingly everyone wanted Rhys dead – the fun in the novel comes trying to figure out who actually did it. And to be clear, there IS fun. Ms Mackintosh has done it again. Great fun. Five stars.
