As someone who has had an up-and-down journey with my weight over the years, I am generally curious about the latest/greatest/whatever guaranteed way to lose weight…and have known several people who have been or are taking one of the GLP-1 products (Wegovy, Mounjaro, Ozempic, whatever). But for me it has been sort of like AI: I don’t really understand how it works or what the implications are for users…is it something that will truly change your life? Is it something that will need to be used FOREVER?
I was pleased to read about a book by Dr. Rocio Salas-Whalen, a board-certified endocrinologist and expert in obesity medicine about these “wonder drugs,” and thanks to Rodale Books and NetGalley, I received a copy of Dr. Salas-Whalen’s book Weightless in exchange for this honest review.
She is a physician who views obesity as a chronic health condition rather than a failing or lack of will power/character/effort on the part of the patient/client. Her focus in the book is being as healthy as you can be, choosing the right product and clinician, preserving muscle while losing, and generally having a good and healthy life at whatever weight you might be.
I still don’t understand GLP-1, and TBH it still scares the crap out of me. Oh, and there is STILL a tiny bit of my brain that believes that the only healthy way is the one that worked for me over the years: eating well and exercising. (Of course, now that I have two different kinds of cancer, my entire thought process about health is somewhat askew, but that’s another story)
Overall, this book is recommended with the caveat that the most important element in weight loss success is a solid relationship with an ethical, knowledgeable physician who will LISTEN and help patients (in addition to selling a product and promising miracles). Four stars.
